Good Morning...Er, Afternoon

Today has been one of those sleepy, rainy days, where leaving bed in the morning seems almost impossible.  It's probably for the best that I'm no longer physically capable of sleeping into the afternoon.  No worries, after two cups of coffee I was buzzing around as usual, and have had plenty to keep me busy today.  Still, the steady dripping just outside our apartment makes me want to slow down, drink something hot, wrap up in something cozy, and maybe doze off for just a little while.

Cabin Fever

Being unemployed does have a few perks (no alarm clocks!), but one of the major downsides to having no job is also having very few reasons to leave the apartment.  It's pretty easy to spend the entire day inside, putzing around, reading, tweaking the old resume.  And the weather being what it is (cold), indoors really does seem like the place to be.  But there is a breaking point, and we hit it today.

Our apartment complex backs up to this great little wooded area that has a couple of paths winding through it.  It's been snowing practically non-stop since Sunday evening, so everything is gorgeous.  We bundled up (I may have worn two pairs of pants) and headed out.  I was expecting a short little loop, but we were able to go pretty far into the woods and ended up turning back before the path ran out.  It wasn't a long outing, but it did the trick.   Maybe tomorrow we can go to the mall!  Just kidding Honey...kinda :-)

Happy Birthday!

This last weekend, we celebrated a very special birthday.  On Friday, my little niece turned one year old.  It's hard to believe she's one, she's still so small, but there's just no arguing with the calendar.  The party was a little on the late side, but Sophia was a trooper and stayed awake and even mostly cheerful for the whole thing.  She loved the candle, wanted nothing to do with the cupcake, and couldn't get enough of all the tissue paper and ribbons.

Lost & Found

Grand Rapids is a pretty cool place.  While looking for a good, second-hand dresser, my sister Katie and I found an awesome antique store downtown.  On the outside, it looks like a giant brick warehouse, and on the inside it's a wonderland of mid-century, modern furniture and quirky accents.  The dressers were a little beyond my reach price-wise, but Katie left with a new hat and we had a lot of fun looking around.

Silver Linings: Spanakopita

Finding myself suddenly unemployed does have a few silver linings.  One of them being spanakopita.  Yesterday, I spent most of the afternoon gathering the ingredients for and assembling two pans of cheesy, spinachy goodness.  It was wonderful to be home in my mother's kitchen and to share a meal with my family at the end of the day.  And something about buttering layers upon layers of phyllo dough is weirdly theraputic.  It must be the butter.

Hello Cincinnati

We've spent the last week in Cincinnati, OH while working in nearby Batavia.  Our workload has been pretty hefty lately, and what with squeezing in a quick trip to Lansing last weekend, we haven't had much time to check out all the fun things to do in the city.  The Cincinnati Dinner Train, for example, that takes you on a three hour train ride in vintage dining cars while feeding you a four course dinner!  Oh well, maybe next time.

On Saturday, we'll be heading back to Michigan.  Our project has been put on hold indefinitely, which puts us back in Limbo.  There might be more work for us as soon as next week, or it might be a matter of months.  So we'll be looking for other jobs and trying to grow our little business as best we can.  Here's hoping we find something soon!

A New Year

I'll admit, 2012 was a pretty tough year in many ways, and I'm not sad to see it end.  Looking forward, 2013 holds a lot of promise, but I have a hunch that it's not going to be an easy year either.  There's a lot that I'd like to accomplish in the upcoming months, but none of it will happen without a little elbow grease.  So here's to a year of hard work, and the hope that it all pays off!
